Build the Care System

Start each decision with four readings: the newest fully expanded leaf, the spacing of the newest three nodes, current pot weight and drainage, and the condition of roots or offsets. Together they show whether light, moisture, and active growth agree.

Light and Rotation

Maintain stable frost-free warmth away from cold glass, hot radiators, and forced air. Average household humidity is often adequate. Correct heat, roots, and watering before misting; wet foliage and stagnant air can complicate leaf spots.

Nutrition

Feed only a rooted actively growing plant, using a balanced houseplant product according to its label. Pause in low light or after root damage. Interveinal yellowing deserves a root and mix check before fertilizer is assumed to be the answer.

Offsets and Pruning

Separate only a healthy offset with its own roots. Remove spent leaves cleanly at their petiole base, but do not strip healthy lower foliage to create a trunk. A rooted pup can make a fuller display or a separate plant; pruning cannot refill old leaf scars.

Problem Prevention

Prevent diagnosis errors by separating dry droop from wet-root droop, mineral dots from pests, normal lower-leaf aging from rapid drop, and old bare stem from new leggy growth. Mark boundaries and change one supported variable.
